From Isolation to Belonging: Rethinking Brain Health Through Community

Individuals suffering from chronic brain conditions may gradually withdraw from social connections, showing signs of apathy and depression. This can lead to strained relationships and decreased self-esteem.

The BC Brain Wellness Program was established in October 2019 by two UBC faculty members, Dr. Silke Appel-Cresswell and Dr. Jack Taunton. Their vision was that individuals with chronic brain conditions would benefit from care that extends beyond standard clinical treatment.

To this end, six years ago, an outreach program was launched to welcome, support, and encourage individuals living with chronic brain conditions, their care partners, and healthy agers. Through multidisciplinary activities, participants connect with peers and engage in classes that promote their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being.

Through art, music, movement, dance, mindfulness, and other educational workshops, participants report improvements in mood, greater confidence, a sense of belonging, increased independence, and an enhanced ability to manage their health and improve their quality of life. Classes are available both online and on-site.

This program also offers opportunities for people to connect with a community beyond the classes.
